Best Ways to Communicate with Your Baby

Expectant parents can’t wait for the day that their new bundle of joy arrives.  However, many new parents then find it difficult to interact with their newborn.  Babies develop communication skills over the first year of life and beyond.  Parents can help to facilitate this development by understanding the appropriate ways to communicate with their babies.

For instance, simply smiling at your baby can be a great way to interact.  Infants are able to interpret facial expression much earlier than they are able to interpret words.  Parents should smile often at their baby, especially when the infant is trying to communicate through cooing or gurgling.  Making eye contact with the baby is also important to show active listening skills.  It is also important that parents give their babies their undivided attention when communicating.  In addition, parents should not become frustrated if they are having difficulty understanding baby’s communicative cues.  In time, they will become easier to interpret.

Talking to babies is another great way to enhance communication.  It is believed that newborns already know the sounds of their parents’ voices if their moms and dads spoke to them while still in the womb.  Babies are also born with the ability to decipher tone of voice.  Infants naturally associate higher pitched voices with comfort, since they resemble the female voice of their mothers.  For this reasons, speaking in a high pitched baby talk can help to foster communication skills.  Parents should also try repeating simple words and should keep a running narrative of their tasks throughout the day in order to facilitate interaction with their infant.

Most babies will be able to respond to smiles and laughter by the age of three months.  Between four and six months, babies learn to babble.  By the time they reach their first birthdays, most infants can speak several words.  Parents play an essential role in this communication development.
